Ubuntu 6.06.2 LTS released

The developers of Ubuntu has released Ubuntu 6.06.2 LTS, which included more than 600 updates issued for Ubuntu 6.06:

Over 600 post-release updates have been integrated, so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation, and the installation system has been improved. These include security updates and corrections, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 6.06 LTS.

According to the concept reflected in the abbreviation LTS, version 6.06 will be maintained and updated:

• Desktop version: until June 2009 (3 years from the date of issuance).
• Server version: until June 2011 (5 years from the date of issuance).

This will allow calmly wait until next «long-playing» release Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and schedule the update to it:

«This maintenance release is a clear demonstration of our long-term commitment to users and businesses who want to use Ubuntu as a core platform,» said Jane Silber, Chief Operating Officer of Canonical UK. «Coming as it does shortly before the next long-term release, Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, it is a clear signal to ISVs, manufacturers, businesses and users that Ubuntu is the Linux platform on which to build a strategy.»

Holders of servers with Ubuntu 6.06 LTS installed and having problems with updates (slow or expensive Internet) I recommend to download Ubuntu 6.06.2 LTS Server Edition and upgrade from it, all others can safety wait until this April when Ubuntu 8.04 LTS will be available.
